How to add an email alias and send and receive email from it

Create an email alias for your domain, then send and receive email from it. In this article we’ll show you how to set up a email forwarder to receive mail, then add the alias in DomainsFoundry Webmail so you can send from it.

What is an email alias?

An email alias is an extra address, like sales@yourdomain.com, that isn’t a full mailbox. Mail sent to the alias is forwarded to an existing mailbox, and you send from the alias using DomainsFoundry Webmail. It’s a quick way to use several addresses from one mailbox.

Before you start

  • You need an DomainsFoundry email hosting service
  • An existing mailbox to receive the forwarded email
  • Your DomainsFoundry Dashboard and Webmail login details

Step 1: Forward email to your mailbox

First, set up a forwarder to direct mail that arrives at your alias to your mailbox.

  1. Log in to DomainsFoundry Dashboard.
  2. Go to My Services.
  3. Select your DomainsFoundry hosting service.
  4. Click Email Forwarders.
  5. Click Add email forwarder.
  6. In the Alias field, type the first part of the alias. For example, sales to create sales@yourdomain.com.
  7. In the Forward to field, type the full email address to forward to. For example, info@yourdomain.com.
  8. Click Add Email Forwarder.

Your forwarder is set up instantly.

Step 2: Add the alias to DomainsFoundry Webmail

Next, add the alias in DomainsFoundry Webmail so you can send email from it.

  1. Log in to DomainsFoundry Webmail
  2. Click Settings.
  3. Click Identities.
  4. Click Create to add a new identity.
  5. Type the alias address you want to send from, for example, sales@yourdomain.com. Add your display name too.
  6. If you want replies to go to a different address, type it in the Reply-To field. Otherwise, leave it blank.
  7. Click Save.

Send an email from your alias

  1. Click Compose to start a new email.
  2. Click the From field and choose your alias.
  3. Write your message and click Send.

The recipient sees the alias as the sender, and replies arrive in your mailbox.

What’s the difference between an alias and an email forwarder?

An email forwarder only forwards incoming mail. An alias combines a forwarder (for receiving) with a Webmail identity (for sending).

Do I need a separate mailbox for the alias?

No. You forward the alias to an existing mailbox. If you want a completely separate inbox, create a full mailbox instead.

Can I reply to emails sent to my alias?

Yes. When you reply, choose the alias in the From field and your reply will come from the alias.
