If a recent WooCommerce update has caused unexpected issues or broken functionality on your website, you can resolve the issue by manually reinstalling a previous, stable version of the plugin.

Before you begin, you can review the official documentation and download the exact version you need using these links:

Important Before Downgrading

WooCommerce Data vs. Plugin Files

Your products, orders, customers, and store configurations are stored securely inside your WordPress database—not within the plugin files themselves. Deactivating or replacing the WooCommerce plugin files will not normally delete your store’s data.

Database Compatibility Risks

Major WooCommerce updates often upgrade your WordPress database structure. If your database has already been updated to match a newer version, simply uploading an older plugin version can cause:

  • Critical site errors (White Screen of Death)
  • Broken checkout flows or payment gateway failures
  • Missing or incompatible dashboard features

If your database has already been updated, you may need to restore a full database backup from the exact period the older WooCommerce version was running.

Recommended Best Practices

Before making any changes to your live store, we strongly recommend that you:

  1. Take a full website and database backup (see our backup options below).
  2. Test the downgrade on a staging site if you have one available.
  3. Verify compatibility to ensure your WordPress theme and payment gateways support the older WooCommerce version you are reverting to.

Option 1: Downgrade via WordPress Admin (Recommended)

This is the quickest and safest method for most store owners.

  1. Download the required WooCommerce version ZIP file from the release archive.
  2. Log into your WordPress Dashboard.
  3. Navigate to Plugins > Add New Plugin.
  4. Click the Upload Plugin button at the top of the page.
  5. Choose the WooCommerce ZIP file you downloaded and click Install Now.
  6. WordPress will detect the existing version. When prompted, click “Replace current with uploaded”.
  7. Activate the plugin if prompted.

Option 2: Downgrade via cPanel File Manager

If you cannot access your WordPress dashboard, you can replace the plugin files directly through cPanel.

Step 1: Open File Manager

  1. Log into your DomainsFoundry cPanel.
  2. Under the Files section, click File Manager.
  3. Navigate to your WordPress plugins directory (typically public_html/wp-content/plugins/).

Step 2: Safety Rename the Existing Plugin

  1. Locate the folder named woocommerce.
  2. Right-click the folder, select Rename, and change it to woocommerce-old. (This acts as a safety net).

Step 3: Upload and Extract the Older Version

  1. Click Upload in the cPanel toolbar and select your downloaded WooCommerce ZIP file.
  2. Once uploaded, return to the File Manager, right-click the ZIP file, and select Extract.
  3. Ensure the newly extracted folder is named exactly woocommerce.

Step 4: Verify Your Store

  1. Clear your browser cache and check that your storefront loads correctly.
  2. Run a test checkout to confirm payment gateways are functioning.
  3. Log into your WordPress admin panel to check for any database update prompts.
  4. Once you are happy everything works, you can safely delete the woocommerce-old folder and the ZIP file from cPanel.

DomainsFoundry Backup & Restore Options

Reliable backups are essential when managing an e-commerce website. If a WooCommerce downgrade does not resolve your issues, you may need to restore a full database backup from the time the previous version was cleanly running.

  • Web & cPanel Hosting: We include simple backup and restore functionality across our standard DomainsFoundry web hosting plans, allowing you to roll back your files and databases with just a few clicks.
  • VPS Hosting: For more complex or high-traffic e-commerce environments, automated backup and restore tools are available as an optional add-on for our DomainsFoundry VPS plans, giving you complete recovery flexibility.

If you are still encountering issues after a rollback, please open a support ticket via your DomainsFoundry dashboard, and our team will be happy to assist.
