It can be surprising when a payment is approved even though your card’s expiry date has passed. This often happens because of the way our payment provider, Stripe, works alongside your bank to keep your services running without interruption.
The Process Behind It
When you store a card in your DomainsFoundry account, Stripe generates a secure, encrypted token that’s tied to your bank account rather than the physical card itself. If the details were saved before the card expired, that token can still be used for future billing.
When it’s time to renew, Stripe sends the transaction request using that token. Your bank then decides whether to authorise it. In many cases, if the card has simply been renewed or replaced by the same bank, the payment will still be approved to avoid disruption to ongoing services or subscriptions.
Common Reasons Payments Still Succeed
- Bank approval rules: Your bank makes the final call on whether to process the payment.
- Continuity of service: Some banks allow charges to go through so customers don’t lose access before they can update details.
- Replacement from same bank: If the new card is from the same issuer, it’s more likely to be accepted.
Important Notes
- This feature isn’t supported by every bank.
- If you’ve cancelled your card, switched banks, or changed your billing address, you’ll need to update your payment method in your DomainsFoundry account.
- Always check your saved card has enough available funds to cover upcoming renewals to avoid any disruption.
By using secure tokenisation, our payment system helps ensure your services stay active and protected, even when your card has expired.
