At their iPhone Media Event today at their headquarters in Cupertino, California, Apple announced the new and improved Apple iPhone 5s alongside their new cheaper iPhone 5c. The iPhone 5s shares the same size and screen as it’s predecessor the iPhone 5, but features an improved spec, including a faster A7 chip, ‘Touch-ID’ fingerprint detection, iOS7 and comes in a choice of three colours. Silver, gold, and ‘space gray’.

As anyone reading our blog will know we’re big Apple fans. Whilst we would never go as far as camping outside an Apple Store, or for that matter queuing (we’re too busy registering domain names), like millions of other people we’re always interested to hear about the latest iThing.

Our first impressions of the iPhone 5s are good. Faster processors are always welcomed and the choice of colours look good. The finger print sensor appeals to our inner Inspector Gadget. One question we do have is how will the sensor work with gloves? We’re thinking even those special finger-tip, iPhone friendly gloves will even have issues. Not good if the coming Winter is as cold and snowy as last year!

Apple also released the new iPhone 5c
Apple also released the new iPhone 5c, a lower priced alterntive to the aluminium iPhone 5s.

Are these features enough to make people upgrade their iPhone 5’s? The ‘s’ version generally get a less rapturous welcome as their predecessors, but still go on to sell millions and break all previous iPhone sales-records. So undoubtedly it will be a success.

What will be interesting is to see whether the cheaper iPhone 5c cannibalise sales from the iPhone 5s. With ongoing concerns about the economy price could be a major factor for new iPhone customers. However like all Apple products the iPhone 5c still comes with a pretty hefty price tag.

Interestingly, whilst Apple are taking pre-orders for the new iPhone 5c from Friday 13th Septmber (unlucky for some), Apple are not taking any pre-orders for the iPhone 5s. This is a departure the iPhone 5 and earlier iPhone launches. Maybe this is to drum up some extra excitement ahead of the iPhone 5s launch?

The UK release date for the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c is Friday, 20th September 2013.
