If you can receive but cannot send email, it’s likely your ISP is restricting access to SMTP on port 25.

This article shows you how to change the default SMTP port number in Microsoft Outlook Express, Microsoft Outlook, Mozzila Thunderbird, Microsoft Entourage and Apple Mail.

Microsoft Outlook Express

  1. Open Outlook Express.
  2. Click Tools > Accounts.
  3. Click the ‘Mail’ tab and double click on your account.

  4. Click the ‘Advanced’ tab and change ‘Outgoing Mail server’ to 26.

  5. Click OK and follow prompts to return to Outlook.

Microsoft Outlook 2003-2007

  1. Open Outlook.
  2. Click Tools > Email Accounts.
  3. Click ‘View or change existing e-mail accounts’.
  4. Double click on your account. Click the ‘More Settings…’ button in the lower-right of the window. A new window will open titled, Internet E-mail Settings.
  5. Click the ‘Advanced’ tab and change the ‘Outgoing server’ to 26.
  6. Click OK and follow prompts to return to Outlook.

Thunderbird

  1. Open Thunderbird.
  2. From the main menu, click Tools > Account Settings.
  3. Click Outgoing Server (SMTP) from the options on the left.
  4. Click on the account to edit and click on the Edit button.
  5. Under the Settings options, enter 26 as the Port number.

  6. Click OK.
  7. Click OK again to return to Thunderbird.

Microsoft Entourage 2008

  1. Open Entourage
  2. From the main menu, click Entourage > Account Settings.
  3. Click the button titled Click here for advanced sending options.

  4. Tick Override default SMTP port and enter 26.

  5. Click the top-left corner to close the window.
  6. Click OK to return to Entourage.

Apple Mail

  1. Open Mail.
  2. From Mail’s top menu click Mail > Preferences.
  3. Click on the account to edit.
  4. Select Edit SMTP server list from the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) drop-menu.
  5. Click Advanced.
  6. Select Use custom port and enter 26 as the port number.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Close the window and when prompted click Save.

Windows Mail

  1. Open Windows Mail.
  2. Click Tools > Email Accounts.

  3. Click on your account. Click the ‘Properties’ button to the right of the window. A new window will open titled, Internet E-mail Settings.

  5. Change the ‘Outgoing server’ port from 25 to 26.

  6. Click OK and follow prompts to return to Windows Mail.
